Cheapest way to get to Haneda Airport from Tokyo City

Haneda Airport is the second busiest airport in Tokyo and also the nearest airport to Tokyo city. It is about an 18 minute drive from Tokyo Station which makes it much easier to get to compared to Narita International Airport.

The cheapest way to get to Haneda Airport from Tokyo City is by public train (aside from walking). Taking the train to Haneda Airport from Tokyo City is super cheap, easy and convenient. However, it is best to check Google Maps to see if the train is a viable option from your location and to also find the nearest line to you (so you won’t end up having to change lines often).

As we were staying in Tsukiji, we had the option of taking the limousine bus or a public train. Both required us to walk a good 10 minutes before we get on board our choice of transport. The train ticket was half the price of the bus ticket and the fact that we did not have to change trains meant that we can actually survive catching the train to the airport.

My friend and I decided that we will be 2 adventurers and take the public transport from our hotel to Haneda Airport.

The three lines that services Tokyo City to Haneda Airport are:
  1. Tokyo Monorail via Hamamatsucho Station
  2. Keikyū Main Line Airport-Kyuko towards Haneda-Airport via Shinagawa Station
  3. Asakusa Line Express towards Haneda-Airport (via Keikyu Line)

Generally, if you’re staying anywhere near the Yamanote line, taking a train is an option to consider. Otherwise, certain trains on the Asakusa line allows you direct access to the airport. So, make sure to check Google Maps to time your departure.

I’ve noticed that the Keikyū Main Line and Asakusa Line Express are cheaper than Tokyo Monorail but all three are almost equal in travel time.

I boarded the Asakusa Line Express from Higashi-Ginza station. It took about 40 minutes from Higashi-Ginza to Haneda Airport International Terminal Station and for less than 500 yen with no train changes, what more can I ask for??

The pros of taking the train:
  • Cheap : One-way tickets typically cost less than 500 Yen (depending on where you are travelling from)
  • Fast
  • Free from traffic jam
The cons of taking the train:
  • Crowded during rush hour
  • No designated luggage area
  • Trains stop service shortly past midnight and will only resume service around 5AM.

Do I recommend it? Yeah, if you are up for an adventure. Also, it is best if you do not have more than 2 suitcases per person and do not have to leave for the airport during peak hours. Otherwise, do try catching the public train to the airport. It is quite an experience.
